Grandmama

If you don’t know who Grandmama is then you’re a little young. That’s my man to the right, Larry Johnson. Larry was the first basketball player that I had a poster of. Sure there was Michael Jordan and Bird and Magic but I was a little young to remember them from the 80′s.

It all started in the 1991 final four. I remember UNLV had won the championship the prior year and they were headed for back-to-back titles. The game came down to a last second shot and I wanted Larry to shoot a 3 to win it but some one else did and they lost. I think I was 11 years old and that may be my first March Madness memory. (unfortunately I watched the Laettner shot live also, hate duke)

The reason I tell this nice little story is because Larry Johnson was in town over the weekend watching his UNLV rebels play in the NCAA Tourney. Saturday I had to go down and meet the man. Shook his hand, told him how much fun it was watching him play and I was on my way. Nice guy, greeted me and smiled and even asked if I was enjoying the games. I was impressed for a guy that was busy both days during every timeout with autograph seekers and pictures.
