Math Camp II: the follow up

Ok, Well it’s late Thursday night and for some reason I feel like I’m letting you that visit down. Some (hopefully all) of you read the post below here. There was a fun little math question that no one answered :( Let me just spell it out for you. It’s a ploy off of the age old math idea that teachers tell their kids to go home and do this to their parents. Here is the trick.

Go home and ask your parents if they’ll give you 1 penny today. Then the next day give you 2 pennies. Then the next day give you 4 pennies. Ask them if they’ll keep doubling the number of pennies each day for a month. See what happens……

So, I’ll let you take a look at that problem and see if your parents would/will do that for you. Here is the quick answer to the Rice problem. A chess board is 8 by 8. So, there are 64 squares. If he gets to take home all of the rice added together from each square, he’ll end up with….. 18,446,744,073,710,000,000. Don’t ask me to read that number but you get the idea. That was 64 squares and you’re only asking your parents for a months worth of cash.
