I recently purchased the Sony Video Camera. There were positives and negatives in buying such a great technology advanced item. In my eyes the positives outweigh the negatives by an elephant load.
My main positive was the fact that this is a video camera with a hard drive built in it. I don’t have to change tapes or worry about that issue. I can video in HD, that’s right 1080i high-definition. I’ll just give you one word on watching my videos on TV, Beautiful. The small LCD viewer is a touch screen. That is one of the cool perks of this camera.
The negative of this camera is how technologically advanced it is. I love viewing my movies from the camera to the TV but just imagine how big those files are. Another downside is I don’t have all the video editing software to burn a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc. Those downsides do not sound that bad when you think that they will catch up to this recorder.
I have used Sony Vegas 7.0e to mess with the videos I have recorded. You need this in order to convert m2ts files that the camera records in. So far so good and I’ve been able to do some things with Vegas and save files. I have used clips to create a DVD and it’s AWESOME.
That is my little review of the Sony HDR-SR5 video camera. Here is a small clip of my little girl filmed in HD mode and then converted into wmv with Sony Vegas 7.0e. http://www.browie.com/videos/isabelle.wmv
I bought mine for $1,000 but you can get the Sony Video Camera cheaper.
This is a slow motion capture on my Sony HDR-SR5 Video Camera.

I’m going to be creating a DVD soon where the camera was on HD setting. I’ll get that finished and write an article about it.

Hi. I have the same camera, but discovered it’s difficult to play back the vids taken in the HD format. The SD vids play and edit just fine on my editing software from Ulead, but the HD videos are in a format that will not be read and I can’t seem to convert them. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yes, you have to get Sony Vega 7.0e That will convert your HD files to whatever you want. the “e” is a add-on or patch for the HD files.

I purchased the Sony HDR-SR5 and I am happy with the camera. Does anybody know how to add the date and time to the bottom of the movies? I have tried to get the date and time displayed on the movies with no luck. Even the most ancient cameras will display the date and time. Please help, if you can.

Ulead Video Studio 11 PLUS supports the avchd format, as does the later editions of Nero.

Does anyone know if you can easily upload, view and edit movies on a Mac?
Thanks

I own a sony HDR SR5 and I am having a hard time seeing the screen in the bright sun when I am shooting. The camera does not have an eye piece. Does anyone know of any idea how I can overcome this problem. Thanks Harry

you can either put some cloth over the camera and look at the lcd screen that way or place some kind over a cap/visor on it..

Does the Sony HDR-SR5 have the “Smooth Interval Recording” feature that some other Sony cameras have? Smooth Interval Recording is NOT the 240 frames/second feature; it is for creating time-lapse videos and it allows you to shoot between one frame per second and one frame per 60 seconds. I know the Sony HC46 has this feature, it’s called “SMTH INT.REC” in the menu.
I’ve looked everywhere and I find no mention of this feature on the HDR-SR5.
