Memorabilia
1. mementos; souvenirs
2. matters or events worthy to be remembered; points worthy of note.
What is worth saving? Are sports memorabilia worth saving? Is your favorite uncles wedding announcement worth saving? How about a box of things from your first boyfriend or girlfriend, is that worth saving? Looking at some of the things I’ve saved, I sure do not have the answer to this question.
Let’s start with this box that I have hidden some where that I can never find. This holds some totally random things from my teenager years. I’ve got pictures, folded papers from various places, tickets from sporting events and other “useless” things in there. What is this stuff worth? Memories? Is it worth it to have these items so when I actually do find this box again, in my mid-40′s, that it will mean something? What about the baseball above my desk right in front of me. I got that after batting practice from an MLB game. Funny thing about that baseball if the fact that I was standing next to kids half my age and when the ball went bouncing around I grabbed it and never let go.
Let’s talk about my largest collection of items, Magazines. I’ve collected (almost) every ESPN The Magazine I received in the mail since I got the subscription. I have no clue how many I have but it’s for sure years worth. We’re talking 5 years or more of magazines. What are they worth to me? Will one of them become famous for being printed? I doubt it. I even started to collect some Golf magazines. For what? Will I get those out in 10 years to find the “old” tips on how to improve your game?
While writing this post I’ve come up with half of an answer. It’s about the stories. When I mentioned my box earlier. There were over 10 things that popped in my head and stories that I remember and the fun things I did at those times. I even shared the slightly funny story about fighting for a meaningless baseball. I really don’t have any fun stories about my magazines but they aren’t for stories. Those magazines are more for the memories of the great sporting events and seasons that have happened.
Take a look at the things you’ve kept over the years. Think about why you’ve collected these items and decide for yourself if saving these items are worth it to you. I know the items I’ve kept have some good stories and memories.

Man sometimes I wonder if I was the only one who kept stuff like this but I guess I’m not. Those things from teenagers and old Raptors/Leafs tickets kept em all, but what to do with them? Nothing, just think about the good times.

I think you got it right. Some of that stuff means nothing until you remember what happened along with it. Some MIGHT be worth something someday but in the long run it only really means something to you.Glad you got it.

I still remember vividly the story about that baseball you got down at the Royals game. Its stuff like that that allow you to remember back to that exact moment. I also collect those little things, such as all my Husker football ticket stubs (including the 2007 Cotton Bowl), State Wrestling programs and a few other things of the such. It might be just a useless ticket stub or a baseball to the average Joe, but to you and those around that know you, they understand that piece–that memento, holds more cost than its “face” value.
